Here at St. Rita’s we offer the two main surgeries for weight loss: the sleeve and the bypass- all performed robotically.
The gastric bypass is otherwise known as the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. This is the gold standard for weight loss surgery, and provides the best weight loss results with the quickest and best resolution of weight-related medical problems. With that may come more surgical risks, particularly the risk of a “leak.” Your surgeon will discuss this at length with you at the seminar and at subsequent visits. You are at risk for leakage for the first two weeks after surgery. There are some long term risks which are also discussed: ulcers, bowel obstructions and nutritional deficiencies. Most of the long term risk can be prevented, however, with regular follow-up, which is imperative for safe success. All weight loss- surgical and non-surgical- patients are at risk for regaining weight. Surgeries are weight loss tools which need to be used correctly long term to work properly. We recommend long term (ideally lifelong) follow-up for all our surgical patients.
